What you think - You Feel!

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 by admin

Carefully watch your thoughts for they become your words.  Manage and watch your words for they become your actions.  Consider and judge your actions for they become your habits.  Acknowledge and watch your habits for they become your values.  Understand and watch your values for they will become your destiny. - Mahatma Gandhi

It’s not necessarily your actual experience that affects you, it’s the way you think and feel about the experience that has the biggest impact in your life.  Our experiences are filtered through our five senses which are :

  • Feelings / emotions
  • Touch
  • Sight
  • Taste
  • Sound

Think back to a wonderful experience you have had in the past, a wonderful holiday, a night out with friends anything that makes you feel good the moment you think about it.  How do you feel now that you have recalled that memory? Do you feel happier and more relaxed than you did before?  I’m sure that you do, even if only slightly.

Can you recognise how easily your thoughts effect your feelings?  Think now about the way you think about your body and your health.  If they are negative thoughts they will no doubt create negative feelings, which in turn can spark negative behaviour.

Right now you are probably caught up in a cycle of negative thoughts and feelings about your weight.  What one positive thought can you take today, write down and make a conscious effort to read regularly throughout the day?

Try it for one day and see how much more positive you feel by the time you go to bed.

If you can’t think of one here’s one to start you off.

I am lovable and full of life!

Successful weightloss is not about the food!

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 by admin

You have probably tried many ways to lose weight before and may not have not been as successful as you would like.  You may have been successful at one point and put weight back on again and are now wondering why what worked before is not working now.

That’s because weight loss is not about the food or the particular diet that you may be on at any particular time.  In fact dieting is the worst thing that you can do ever - but that’s for another post.  Everyone knows that if you eat less and exercise more you will lose weight - but if you know it what stops you from doing it?  or what stops you from maintaining those new healthy habits that wonderful diet taught you?

Your emotions - that’s what.
Most of the eating that overweight people do has no link to whether they are hungry or their body needs fuel, it is purely driven by the emotion that is being felt at that moment in time.  For example, boredom can lead you heading straight for the fridge and the thing to remember is that when you head to the fridge for an emotional snack it’s never the celery that you pick.  Your feelings are driving your behaviour.

When ever people break their healthy eating plans it is always some kind of emotional trigger that starts it off and keeps it escalating.

Next time you reach into the fridge or the cupboard, stop and ask yourself - Am I really hungry?  What am I feeling right now?
If the answer is that you are feeling an emotion rather than real hunger, the STOP, do something else, that doesn’t involve putting food into your mouth.
